Visiting Thirunelli Temple is still one of my favorite experiences I've had in India so far. Thirunelli Temple is located in the area of Wynard outside of Kalpetta. While somewhat difficult to get around, Wynard is a nature reserve and absolutely beautiful. I recommend renting a taxi for the day (which is pretty cheap to do in India and your hotel/hostel can help you set it up). My taxi driver was a Hindu who frequents the temple. We took our shoes off and left them with the pile of shoes at the bottom of the stairs and began to climb. I was under the belief that only Hindus were allowed inside the temple, but he beaconed for me to follow.
