Beneath the gleaming copper dome of Maine's State House, history feels remarkably present. Fort Western stands as America's oldest surviving wooden fort, its 1754 palisades a testament to frontier determination. The Kennebec River cuts through downtown, offering kayaking adventures past historic buildings and under arching bridges. Old Federal-style mansions line tree-shaded streets where governors once strolled. The Maine State Museum brings the region's past to life with everything from ice-age exhibits to meticulously recreated 19th-century workshops. For the best breakfast in town, ask a state employee – they've sampled every diner within walking distance of their offices.
"Welcoming staff, great rooms at a great price, different tiers of rooms (the “deluxe” ones have indoor/hallway entrances while the regular ones have outdoor entrances). I have stayed twice in a regular room and it has been quiet, warm, comfy bed, and great filtered water tap in the rooms. They have a lovely breakfast room/bar, and they have almond milk as a breakfast option with granola for vegans such as myself. (No vegan food options on the evening menu however). "
"I was on a business trip. I arrived late because of a snow storm and the person checking me in was very nice and friendly, taking the time to see that I could get to my room and not get lost. Checkout the next morning was quick and easy. That person checking me out again was very friendly and helpful. My only complaint about the cleanliness wasn't to do with my room, but the hall carpeting could use a good cleaning or maybe even replacement."
