Sometimes it’s the little things that differentiate a ho-hum hotel from a superior one. The Maxx offers many excellent qualities, including a location precious few steps away from San Souci Park, an exceptionally quiet street for good sleep, and elegantly appointed rooms.
Two things disappointed us in our stay; the restaurant did not seem prepared for dinner guests when we arrived. Only a few small tables by the bar were not labeled as reserved, even though there were only two customers present, neither of whom appeared to be dining. Further, we stood around for several minutes, expecting to see a host, a waiter, or even just a busboy. Finally we gave up and had dinner around the corner. Second disappointment was regarding the cost of breakfast at €19. I understand the Maxx offers a breakfast buffet, which may be very good value, but for guests with modest appetites, the entrance price is just not approachable. Again, we decided against eating at the hotel.
It was a shame that such a magnificent property has significant flaws. Stay there if you’re visiting San Souci, but maybe plan to eat elsewhere.
