This Inn is extremely run-down and poorly maintained. We did not actually check in when we saw the accommmodations. Avoid.

Past its time
The place desperately needs maintenance and clearly has become too much for the owner to upkeep. We forfeited our one night fee and chose not to stay

Short on expectations.
I should have heeded the September 2016 review. The owner was very pleasant but too many shortcomings from the property and service. The property definitely needs some polish to fit the B&B image it tries to portray. The room itself was fair but very bare bones. Breakfast was ok; we simply ordered omelets (and no sausage, bacon, etc.) but were told that all they had was cheese. I guess only one omelet could be made at a time but it took over an hour, and we were the only customers. Pretty costly for what you get. Beware, no cell/internet service.

Stay at the Azaleah Cottage, at the Inn on Thistle Hill
I was greeted by a lovely, amiable couple, upon my arrival at the Thistle Hill Inn; where I stayed for the purpose of hiking the scenic nearby Old Rag Mountain trail, but ended up hiking the marvelous, nearby White Oak Canyon trail of the Shenandoah National Park instead! In my hike, I enjoyed relaxing views of winding trails, in a serene wilderness area, with peaceful waterfalls. The hike was beautiful, and the presence of park rangers, as well as the presence of many other human beings; who were hiking the same trail; made me feel secure that, if any accident were to happen during my hike, that there would be people to provide succour, and to come to my rescue. I shared a room with my mother, at the inn; where our hostess prepared a wonderful, hearty, wholesome, home-made, and abundantly well served, breakfast for us; and kept us company during the meal, at times; while entertaining us with pleasant conversation that made us feel very welcomed and cared for, at her home.

Has seen better days...
We had a reservation at another B&B fall through and were looking for a place at the last minute. Thistle Hill had a room and looked cute and homey online. The reality is that the inn has not been maintained or updated in what appears to be a long time... peeling paint, overgrown grass, and a general feeling of lack of upkeep. There was no wifi in our room. The bed was comfortable and we did sleep fine. There were no towels in the room and we had to ask for them twice. The host asked when we would like breakfast upon check-in, but had just started to prepare it at that time. It was nothing special, consisting of overcooked eggs and sausage and biscuits and portions were small. We needed a place to stay and that is what we had, but it was not worth $200 a night and we would not stay there again.

We had a lovely stay during the Virginia Garden week home tour. Such a nice couple, are the Innkeepers!
The room was very comfortable with a king size bed and luxury linens. Breakfast was delightful. Our hostess even provided gluten free toast, with scrambled eggs and sausage, ice cold fresh orange juice and hot tea/coffee. The view from the breakfast table, was of the gazebo, with an active bird feeder and nature in harmony; beautiful spring flowers all about the grounds.

Sperryville area hotel
The hotel is definitely dated and needs quite a bit of updating. Internet is only available in about a 40 foot range in the main building. The lady running it is the owner. The husband apparently had a stroke somewhat (maybe) recently so she appears to be handling it a lot on her own which is admirable but quite a lot for a lady of her age to deal with. The "gardener" also apparently broke his leg recently so the garden and yard were overgrown. The room was old with a loud room a/c unit and the fireplace boarded up for the summer. The breakfast which we were sort of counting on, given previous reviews, was also a disappointment. She asked if we wanted a 9am breakfast. We asked if we could get it at 8:30 so we could get hiking early and she had no problem with that. When we arrived at 8:30 she hadn't started anything yet so we sat down and waited. I believe we finally got served breakfast between 9 and 9:15 which but us a bit of time behind schedule for the day. She's a very nice lady but it's too much for her to do. We did see a for sale sign when we turned in to the property so I guess they're trying to get out of it altogether, which is probably good.

Once may have been nice
The pictures on their website seem a bit dated and don't provide a accurate representation of current conditions. The Inn on Thistle Hill may have once been quaint; unfortunately it seems due the age and health of the owners that it has fallen into being a bit unkempt and cluttered in the grounds and main house. Our room cottage with bathroom was decent for our nightly sleeping - we spent most of the days touring the local wineries so we didn't have any daytime activities at the inn. Had we been inclined to stay at the inn during the day, there really wasn't any facilities or nice garden areas to sit in order to relax. Breakfast was good country cooking - eggs to order, bacon, sausage, hash browns, biscuits and jams. And the cooking staff loves Neil Diamond - or that's the only CD they have. We stayed two nights. Due to no coordination between the owners and hired staff, our room was not made up after the first night, nor were fresh towels provided. We had to go track down the owner once we returned the first day in order to get fresh towels for the next morning. No Cell service due to location; Wifi access limited to the dining room of the main house. The location was a bit out of the way from the wineries we visited. Poor planning on our part. Next time we will do better research on accommodations closer to the wineries we intend to visit.

A Hidden Gem
This place is magical! My significant other surprised me by bringing me to the Inn on Thistle Hill after a day of hiking at White Oak Canyon. We got in late, but our hostess, Shauna, greeted us with immense hospitality and charisma, guiding us to our reserved cottage. The Azalea Cottage was private, cozy, and elegantly decorated - very romantic. We felt immediately welcome and at home. Though we discovered good restaurants in nearby Culpeper, our favorite part of the evening was making use of the rustic fireplace and delightfully luxurious sheets. Frank prepared a phenomenal breakfast for us the next morning. In addition to coffee and orange juice, we were treated to homemade yogurt, jam, biscuits, eggs how we liked them, sausage, and hashbrowns... it was all delicious. Both Frank and Shauna were very conversational, and seemed genuinely interested in getting to know us, as well as sharing some of their amazing story. Cell service is spotty at present, but I was able to get decent signal with Virgin/Sprint service when I stepped outside our cottage. If you're looking for a a serene and unique place to escape from the hustle and bustle, consider the Inn on Thistle Hill.

Lovely home in the woods, warm, friendly hosts...
My husband and I stayed at the Inn so that we would have close proximity to Old Rag Mountain and White Oak Canyon trails for hiking. The Diana room was generous in size and the soaking tub was a treat after our long days of hiking. The breakfasts were hot and good and the conversations enjoyable.

Lots of character near Shenandoah
Definitely not an exceedingly fancy place, but very clean and comfortable. The proprietors are a very sweet older couple who make you feel right at home. The breakfast was amazing and we enjoyed being serenaded with Neil Diamond songs by Frank as he cooked (even though we aren't really fans of Neil Diamond). If you're down-to-earth, open-minded and enjoy a unique experience, this is the place for you! If you're looking for the five star treatment, you should look elsewhere.

A Night away from DC
It was a pretty nice B&B. It seemed a little pricey for what we got. Though we were trying to get away, there was no cell service and no WiFi, which was a bit disconcerting, especially given that we had left our kids with a sitter and didn't like being unreachable.

Thistle Hill Review II
The building is rundown and needs a major refurbishment. The accommodations are way overpriced. There is no charm to the place. The breakfast was okay but nothing exceptional.
