Unique experience, a stay at an old Hawaiian house we had to ourselves. Old and quaint but in good condition. Very convenient for visiting Volcanoes NP and a few dining options nearby.

Island Hop getaway
The house is in a lovely area, close to the volcano national park, which is what brought us here. Owner was easily reachable. Facility has lots of supplies for showering and sleeping. The reason for the 3 stars is the flooring is old carpet and in much need of replacement. Although there is a housekeeper that comes and I’m sure they’ve cleaned the carpet it’s just time to replace it. The only other issue is check in. It’s self check in and quite simple which is nice but the keys are left outside and anyone could come and pick them up and go in. My suggestion would be a keypad entry to house given only to guests then have keys for guests waiting inside. Otherwise it’s a nice older home easily accessible to the park and provides the basic necessities in bath, kitchen and bedrooms.

There is a lot of noise, but it’s the sounds of beautiful birds chirping . The neighborhood felt safe and tranquil.

Place was nice and clean. Since it was dark just need more path lighting. Was kind of far from town but overall a great place to stay.

A really roomy, comfortable place to stay. Nice kitchen and dining room, big bed, excellent showers and bathrooms. Absolutely worth the money.

This house hotel was great. Check-in was a breeze and the private and shared spaces were well maintained for an older property. The village of Volcano is quite small but had some great dining options. The property itself felt a bit isolated, and that was generally a positive for me. However, I could see how some could find its isolation a negative.

Not having someone there was convenient and kind of odd at the same time. It’s a very creaky house due to its age. The price is the best I saw on the whole island. Pretty far from the bigger towns though.

It reminded me a bit of a hostel in terms of the shared kitchen and bathroom. However the room was much nicer than most hostels I’ve been to. It

Near the national park entrance, not near anything else. Plan on doing a lot of driving if you stay here. The conecide would probably be best for most people. The house is small, the bathrooms are shared, very basic.

Never saw any staff from checkin to check out, but didn’t need them at all anyways. Everything was ready when I arrived. Close to small town that has everything. Easy entry to the park.

Property mostly unattended except for housekeeping and maintenance, I liked that. Very clean and maintained. We stayed a week and felt like a cozy little home and not at all like a noisy crowded resort. Uses water collected from rain stored in a tank so bring bottled water to drink or cook. It's on elevated land and even in summer the temps were cool and comfortable. Very close to volcano national Park and not to far to get to Hilo either. I'd recommend staying here and had the best price on the island.

Superb Self-Catering in Volcano!
Volcano Hale is excellent at what it says it is, and I therefore give it 5 stars. It is not an Inn or an Hotel! It is, though, a fun, comfortable, eclectically decorated self-catering place. So you check yourself in to a spacious vintage house, cook your own food, share bathrooms, and (most importantly) you clean up after yourself. The bedrooms are quite nice. You will also meet lovely new people at the breakfast table, or when you return each evening from a thrilling day of peering into volcanoes. Highly recommended as fun, different, interesting, comfortable, and good value.

The Volcano Hale is located in a quiet residential area, but it's super convenient for visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The shared bathroom turned out not to be an issue - I was never in conflict with any of the other guests at the property. Parking was convenient at this perfectly pleasant property. Check-in and check-out are simple and don't require any interaction with the off-site staff, so it didn't matter when I arrived or left. When I'm in the area in the future, I'll definitely consider Volcano Hale for my stays.

4/10 Fair

Budget Option Only
If you are on a budget (as I was) and can live with thin walls, no A/C or functional fan, shared bathrooms, and uncleanliness, then this place is for you - otherwise, I'd look elsewhere. I could live with everything but the uncleanliness(floors/kitchen/bathrooms were dirty and stayed that way). The dust on top of the fridge appeared to rival the petroglyphs in age.

6/10 Good

Positives- location - this property is very close to Volcanos national park. The property is very isolated, make sure you have supplies before arriving. There was never any contact with the hosts, they ask you to write your CC info on a piece of paper and leave it in your room. No verification of guests is done, you simply pick up an envelope freely available at the front door and your off. I could have been anyone and grabbed the keys. There were only 3 out of 5 rooms occupied when i was there, so bathrooms were not an issue, there were plenty of towels available. A coach or sofa in the common areas would have made them more usable. All in all, a reasonable place to stay close to the park, just make sure to purchase any supplies before arriving. The local town/village of Volcano is not very well stocked. If you were disabled, this would be a difficult choice, it is an old house with staircases, so be aware of that.

Beautiful location in a very quiet neighborhood. We stayed a week at Volcano Hale. Bought our own groceries near the airport since we read there were no stores near the house. Drove over 2 hours from Kona and less than an hour from Hilo when we did day trips. The house is only close to Volcano National Park. We did everything from seeing the turtles on Black Sand Beach, 4 wheeling to star gaze up over 13,800 feet on Mauna Kea Volcano, 4 wheeling to Green Sand Beach, saw Akaka waterfall, the sea arch, snorkeling at Captain Cook Monument, hiking 4 miles, secluded beaches, several costal cliff overlooks etc. This home was very comfortable in the middle of nowhere with beautiful flowers and we enjoyed the short moments we saw other guests. Everyone is tired after sightseeing so we all just slept. We cooked most of our meals here. There is a refrigerator to keep groceries cold. A stove, microwave, coffee maker with coffee provided and a toaster. Lots of clean towels, shampoo, soap and toilet paper provided. No lotion or conditioner. We had to empty the dehumidifier daily and even had a guest from downstairs ask us to turn ours off because it rattled his ceiling. I guess bring ear plugs so you can sleep peacefully like we did. Our room #306 on the second floor had 2 queen beds. Same floor as the kitchen and dining room. The ground floor had several rooms, own entrance, bathroom and sitting area. The 3rd floor has another bathroom & 2 bedrooms. Yes we recommend this home.
