The Friars Carse has a lot of character, which we enjoyed. We especially liked the snooker room. The grounds and walk along the river were beautiful. The staff was very attentive and friendly. We enjoyed a three-course meal one evening in the dining room, which is nice for a little splurge.
While we found the room itself to be of adequate size, it was very dusty. The headboards, side tables, and top of the wardrobe had loads of dust and pet hair, as if it hadn't been cleaned properly.
One of our party has severe dog allergies (prone to hives and a constricted airway when exposed to dogs), so our biggest drawback was the amount of dogs at the hotel. It seems we stayed on a night with an exceptionally high volume of guests with dogs.
When booking the hotel, we didn't see any promotion of this being a dog hotel, but did see a notice after booking that dogs are allowed everywhere except the main dining room. We respect and appreciate that dogs are part of many families, but it made the main lounge and bar unusable for us. This left us with the option to be in the dusty room, outside, or dining area - as the dogs eventually took over the snooker room as well. While we don't fault the hotel for this, it's worth noting for anyone with strong allergies.
