The best local restaurants in Munich specialise in dishes inspired by the city’s vibrant culture and rich history. Munich is known for its stunning architecture, Munich Oktoberfest, sprawling beer gardens and vast beer halls, and, of course, beer.
But this Bavarian city has a lot to offer by way of food, particularly its local cuisine, which includes schweinshaxe (whole pork knuckle), weißwürste (white sausage), and schweinebraten (traditional pork roast). Here are some of our favourite places to enjoy Munich’s best local food.

Haxnbauer im Scholastikahaus
Local favourite serving pork knuckles
- Gastronomía
- Vida nocturna
Haxnbauer im Scholastikahaus is known for serving one of the best schweinshaxen (pork knuckle) in Munich. Over the years, Haxnbauer has evolved from a Haxnbraterei into a pub that has maintained historic fixtures like its stucco ceilings and wooden furniture.
The secret to its famous pork knuckles lies in the preparation. The meat is rested for 24 hours and steeped in Haxnbauer’s secret signature marinade. It’s then cooked over beechwood charcoal, which gives it its crunch while keeping the meat tender and juicy. Aside from its signature pork knuckle, you can also find dishes like the Wiener schnitzel (Viennese cutlet) and local pastries on the menu.
