Our Lady's Church, or Fruekirka as it is often called by the people of Trondheim, is a stone church from the Middle Ages with a long history. Throughout the ages, the church has often ended up in the shadow of its big brother Nidaros Cathedral, which is close by, but it is Fruekirka that local residents consider as the city's own church.

It is a much-loved meeting place in the heart of Trondheim, and many locals use it as a place to meet with others, have a cup of coffee, light a candle or enjoy some quiet time. Most of the interior fixtures are made locally and have been donated by the city's residents, so when you visit the church, it can be fun to imagine the many stories behind the various objects you see here.

One of the most photographed sights in Trondheim is Gamle Bybro, or Bybrua as it is also known. The bridge was built at the end of the 17th century and crosses the Nidelven, connecting Midtbyen with Bakklandet. A dear child has many names, or so the saying goes, and the bridge is also called "The portal of happiness" after the lyrics "«Nidelven stille og vakker du er».".

The unique design, idyllic location and the view of the old, brightly coloured coastal houses, have made the bridge one of the city's most visited attractions. Make sure you allow plenty of time to explore the beautiful surroundings, and if you like taking photos, then this part of town is a must!

The historic Bryggerekka in Trondheim is located on both sides of the Nidelven, where the oldest of the listed buildings date back to the 18th century, when they were used as warehouses by the city's merchants. Today, several of the piers in Bakklandet are used for residential purposes, while many of the sea-facing buildings have been converted into shops and restaurants.

The colourful piers that frame the Nidelven are one of the city's most photographed scenes, and they are particularly beautiful when reflected in the river. The best view is from Gamle Bybro, and the best way to explore the historic buildings up close is on foot. On Sundays, there is a flea market at Bryggerekka, where you can find everything from antiques to clothes and food stalls, along with bustling crowds.

Marinen is an old defence facility on the Nidelven, which together with General von Hüth's bastion and Bastion Prince Carl was built to protect the city from attack from the sea. Most of the facility has gradually been lost, and now there are only a few buildings left.

Today, Marinen is used as a park and outdoor area, which offers large, green lawns to sit or run about on. It's a favourite haunt with the locals, frequented by people of all ages. If you come here in summer, do as the Trondheimers do and enjoy a picnic, play ball games or just relax in the sun. During the summer months, both festivals and concerts are held here, many of which are worth attending.
