The Royal Charterhouse in Valldemossa was constructed by King James II of Mallorca as a palace for his son Sancho. In 1399, Martin of Aragon gifted all the royal possessions of Valdemossa to Carthusian monks.
The church has some of the best displays on the whole site, including a neoclassical building with artistic works from some of the best artists at the time. The complex also has a cloister, an old pharmacy, restored rooms of the Prioral Cell, a dormitory and a vast garden. When you visit, you can get a glimpse into the way the Carthusian monks lived.

The Royal Charterhouse in Valldemossa has a lot of fascinating history. Saint Catherine of Palma, one of Mallorca’s patron saints, was born in the monastery in 1533. Several of the cells were available for rent after the monks were expelled, one of which was rented by composer Frédéric Chopin. He composed numerous works in the cell.
Now, the cell is preserved as the ‘Chopin cell’ and a small museum with Chopin’s Pleyel upright piano, paintings, documents and other memorabilia. Another famous person, writer George Sand, stayed in the cell and create works during that time.
