I can’t thank Hostel Kyoto Arashiyama enough! I spaced out on notifying them about late arrival, the reservation states the office closes at 8pm. Realized it on the train after 8pm. Got to the hostel just before 9pm and the gentleman was there waiting for us, with our reservation printed out and smiling! I have no idea how late he was planning on waiting but it saved me!!! Arigayato!! Super clean, comfy! We got the room with 4 bunks and couch, worked out great! AC worked. Great quiet location close to a ton of attractions in the remote part of town! Monkey park, bamboo forest, Tenryuji temple, cute kimono forest at the local train station, river walk are all within 5 minutes! Also, if you get the JR pass (we bought it at the airport in Tokyo as it was the same price as a return ticket to Kyoto on the Shinkansen, and it was all inclusive for a week on all JR lines, including a big network once we returned to Tokyo!), there is a local train from Kyoto station that is included (San-In line), stops at Arashiyama station. From there it’s maybe 8 minute walk - flat and easy, I did it with suitcases and two kids no problem! It also got us back to the city for some of the other attractions. Loved our stay!!! We didn’t use it but they had a coin washer dryer if needed, you can use the fridge in the reception area and they had a free coffee machine:) they only have maybe four rooms, super friendly and sweet!
